Garden Terrace

In response to the wonderful growth of our cultural program, the alfresco area was reconfigured in 2021 (completed in October) to provide a larger and more comfortable space for patrons to enjoy at all times of the year.

The space features Kapi Tjukula, painted by Margaret Richards, commissioned by UKARIA and acquired through the APY Art Centre Collective with the generous support of Ulrike Klein AO.

Artwork - Kapi Tjukula

Artist: Margaret Richards

Size: 420x240cm (installed October 2021)

Medium: Acrylic on Belgian Linen

The circles in this painting represent the many rockholes (tjukula) throughout Margaret’s country. Margaret is from Pipalyatjara in the APY Lands and is an important Ngangkari (traditional doctor) in the region. Pipalyatjara is in the far north-west of South Australia right near the border with Western Australia. It is culturally significant country and Margaret says ‘I hold a lot of important stories and knowledge for that country, from my family line and in my work as Ngangkari. Some of the most important knowledge is around water, the location and sacred properties of water sources throughout my country. This is why I paint tjukula, because water in the desert is so important to Anangu.’

About the Artist

Margaret was born 1 July 1957 in her country around the community of Pipalyatjara. She is the daughter of acclaimed APY artist Harry Tjutjuna, who passed away in May 2019, having had a hugely successful artistic career first at Ernabella Arts and then at Ninuku Arts. Margaret moved to Adelaide around 2003. Margaret has a natural gift, which has been apparent ever since her first day painting at the APY studio in May 2019. Margaret’s markmaking and aesthetic has similarities with her father’s even though she is painting different Tjukurpa (story).

Details in the Garden Terrace

The original alfresco space has been retained, extended and enclosed with a 4m high glass wall embracing the views and the landscape beyond.

Sliding doors enable the space to open up on fine days to further the connection with the garden.

A polished concrete floor with in-floor heating warms the space on those chilly winter evenings.

Great care has been taken to connect the space with the concert hall in both the choice of materials, the use of timber and meticulous detailing.

The timber ceiling incorporates acoustic absorption to keep the ambient sound level at a comfortable level as well as adding the warmth and inclusiveness of the space.

In August 2022, G-Force Construction won the Master Builders' Award for Best Commercial/Industrial Building up to $2M for The Garden Terrace at UKARIA Cultural Centre. This win is testament to the attention to detail and exquisite finish . And, as always, thanks to Anton Johnson for his architectural vision that G-Force brought to life in this project.
