UKARIA honours our First Nations by fostering a shared sense of respect for this land, and we acknowledge and pay our respects to the Peramangk, traditional custodians of the land on which the Cultural Centre stands.

A complimentary showing of this production celebrating Mark Atkins' unique gifts as a poet, storyteller, singer-songwriter and didgeridoo virtuoso in a semi-staged program imagined as a gathering around a campfire. Nightfalls features poems drawn from Mark's life, stories inspired by the Australian natural and cultural landscape, and tall tales of bushmen, travellers and other colourful characters.

Mark has collaborated with composer Erkki Veltheim who in turn has worked with some of Australia’s best performers including Genevieve Lacey, recorders, Stephen Magnusson, guitar; Anthony Pateras, piano and analogue synthesizers, Scott Tinkler, trumpet; and Vanessa Tomlinson, percussion, to create an enchanting soundtrack with the live performance. The creative team is completed by Ruth Little (Dramaturg) and Niklas Pajanti (Lighting Design).

'This is a wonderful opportunity for me to celebrate and honour my Yamatji heritage through my contemporary practice,' Mark says. 'The best moments happen around the fire late at night under the stars... I'm really excited to share these histories, real and imagined.'

The work was commissioned by Tura with the support of the Australia Council for the Arts and Ulrike Klein AO.

This Nightfalls showing is presented by Tura in association with UKARIA as part of Finding Our Voice, which is supported by the Restart Investment to Sustain and Expand (RISE) Fund – an Australian Government initiative. Tura’s ongoing programs are supported by the Australia Council and the Western Australian Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries.
