TOUR DE TROIS
'I'm very excited to present this program of five wildly different and visionary composers. Max Reger is the last giant of the romantic period, and his monumental Chaconne for solo violin is like a musical frieze depicting the development of music from Bach to Brahms. Controversial futurist, author, inventor, pianist and composer George Antheil, whose 1945 autobiography was entitled The Bad Boy of Music, wrote in a style which fused modernism, romanticism and jazz. His Sonatine for Violin and Cello is a foil for the next short work on the program which asks the question: What happens when modernist Jörg Widmann writes a piece based on the James Bond theme?
Alfred Schnittke's first Sonata for Violin and Piano, modelled on the famous Shostakovich second Piano Trio, is an exciting rhythmic and melodic tour de force unlike anything in his subsequent output. Finally, Ravel's sublime and masterful Piano Trio concludes this program.
Thanks to UKARIA, I'm exceptionally lucky to now be the custodian of an extraordinary Vuillaume violin, an instrument of rare qualities and, for an instrument from 1859, of even rarer condition. For my first concert at UKARIA with this instrument, it was important to me to present a major French piece of music, such as the Ravel Trio, to showcase this French violin, but also to display the versatility and power of the instrument in a diverse range of other music as well.'
