A bell-like tone, pristine technique and interpretative smarts are the hallmarks of Angela Hewitt’s glittering career. Celebrated by Gramophone as “effortlessly eclipsing all competition”, it is thirty years since she released her first recording of Bach’s keyboard partitas. Her 2018 re-recording of those pieces met similar acclaim, with The Guardian UK saying that “it glows like old gold.” Awarded the City of Leipzig Bach Medal in 2020, Hewitt is renowned for her performances of that composer’s music.
She returns to Australia with four Scarlatti sonatas and a Bach partita which have all won her devoted followers and international recording plaudits. In addition to these works, her program concludes with three pieces from Chopin’s mature oeuvre. Though born two centuries after Bach and Scarlatti, Chopin was a lifelong admirer of both composers. This great Canadian pianist follows these subtle threads of inspiration and influence through the keyboard music she is so well known for and knows so well.
