The twisting motivic cells of Paul Stanhope's first String Quartet reveal themselves across a series of energetic and evocative tableaux: a brooding, argumentative opening reflects on the shortcomings of Australian politics; a lyrical lullaby calls the redemptive innocence of childhood; a blues-inflected dance finale culminates in a bravura coda.

Brahms wrote his third and final String Quartet 'to avoid facing the serious countenance of a symphony'. Although composed in a single year and described by the composer as 'a useless trifle', the work is now considered one of the most flawlessly crafted quartets in the repertoire. Atypically bright, optimistic and full of humour, it makes the perfect conclusion to the Australian String Quartet's second morning concert at UKARIA for 2021.
