CONCERT FIVE | CREATION OF THE WORLD

‘The final concert of our festival starts (rather modestly) with nothing less than The Creation of the World, a suite from a ballet by Darius Milhaud, inspired by African myths concerning the origins of our world. The atmosphere of my own Piano Quintet can be seen to be related to my Second Symphony “Johannes Angelos”, inspired by a historical novel taking place in the middle of the turbulent times during the last months of Byzantine Constantinople in 1453.

Martinů is one of my absolutely favourite composers, and his Sonata for Flute and Piano is certainly one of the most exciting works ever written for that particular combination of instruments. Our festival concludes with my Septuor Champêtre, which was originally written as a birthday present for my neighbour, drawing its inspiration from our life at Erkylä Manor; from the wonders great and small of the natural environment as well as of human existence.’

– Olli Mustonen
