The wind quintet ensemble is a unique phenomenon: five instruments, vastly different in voice, range and dynamic profile, joining together in a feat of subtle balance and lightness of touch. In a welcome return to UKARIA, the renowned LA Philharmonic Wind Quintet – including Adelaide’s own Andrew Bain, Principal Horn of the LA Phil – presents an array of music for this distinctive musical grouping. Dancing their way through a wide-ranging program, the ensemble will showcase the imagination and creativity with which composers have historically responded to the challenge posed by the genre: Carl Nielsen’s masterful 1921 Wind Quintet is set alongside 1940s Jean Françaix and 1950s Leonard Bernstein, as well as contemporary offerings from American composer Valerie Coleman and Australian composer Ross Edwards. It is an enticing musical menu, celebrating the nuanced colourings, distinctive voice and virtuosity that define the genre itself and the LA Philharmonic Wind Quintet.
