Hope Song Cycle
One night only at UKARIA: the world premiere of a new song cycle written by South Australian composer Jodie O’Regan for one of Australia’s most beloved mezzo-sopranos, Sally-Anne Russell.
In 2023, Sally-Anne visited Jodie’s Burra home and studio and left with a setting of Emily Dickinson’s Hope Is the Thing with Feathers. She went on to perform the song at the Sydney Opera House and in concert halls across Europe.
Inspired by Sally-Anne’s glorious voice and vivid artistry, Jodie created a complete cycle for her, setting poems by Hone Tūwhare, Sara Teasdale, Christina Rossetti and Frances Frost. At UKARIA, Hope Song Cycle comes home to South Australia for its first complete performance, in a new arrangement for mezzo-soprano, flute, cello and harp.
Sally-Anne will be joined by Linda Pirie, Joseph Freer and Suneetha Carter. The concert will be recorded live and preceded by a conversation with Jodie and Sally-Anne.
