CONCERT FOUR | ANDERSENIANA

Carl Nielsen made a modest but charming contribution to the keyboard literature for children with his Humoreske-bagateller, here performed on flute and guitar – two instruments that speak with unrivalled clarity in UKARIA's crystalline acoustic. Janne Thomsen was also the inspiration behind Olli Mustonen's Anderseniana – five miniatures inspired by the fairy tales of her compatriot Hans Christian Anderson.

Ismo Eskelinen, our exquisite Finnish guitarist, takes us back in time with a selection of sixteenth-century fantasias written for the vihuela – an early precursor to the modern guitar, tuned like an Italian lute. Niccolò Paganini's Terzetto Concertante reveals the great violin virtuoso's lifelong interest in the guitar whilst also assigning equally prominent roles to the viola and cello, before Franco-Dutch siblings Cosima and Sào Soulez Larivière (violin and viola) join Janne Thomsen and Timo-Veikko Valve (cello) to conclude the morning with a special arrangement of Rossini's rambunctious William Tell Overture.
