Italian conductor and cellist extraordinaire Umberto Clerici – former Principal Cellist of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and now Chief Conductor of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra – is no stranger to UKARIA. In a celebration of musical friendship – with its special alchemy of trust and spontaneity – Umberto assembles a collection of friends who also happen to be some of Australia’s most celebrated music-makers. Hear their combined talents as they navigate a program of high drama. Rachmaninov’s tempestuous early Piano Trio, written in memory of his deceased mentor Nikolai Rubinstein, is juxtaposed with Shostakovich’s own youthful contribution to the piano trio repertoire – in tribute to a childhood sweetheart. These trios are countered with Schubert’s epic Trout Quintet – a perfect opportunity to experience five musicians at the height of their powers in full flight.
