VOICES OF NATURE – UKARIA 24

Friday 16 October 2020  |  7:30PM

Five decades before Vivaldi's The Four Seasons, Bohemian virtuoso Heinrich Biber wrote Battalia – a strikingly innovative work that harnessed the unique timbral qualities of stringed instruments to depict the scene of a great battle. Violent pizzicatos and snapped strings evoke artillery fire and the clash of swords; a 'prepared' bass becomes a marching drum toward an inexorable death.

Originally containing the subtitle 'action for dance', Luciano Berio's Naturale layers field recordings of Sicilian street cries against live viola and percussion. Gabrielle Nankivell and Thomas Fonua from Australian Dance Theatre join curator Lawrence Power for an unmissable collaboration.

In the second half, Lawrence leads a string orchestra from the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) in Piazzolla's The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires, interspersed with seasonal vignettes by Brahms and Schubert. This strikingly eclectic program will set the tone for a weekend unlike any other.
