3MA is the meeting of three virtuosi: Malian kora magician Ballaké Sissoko, the Moroccan maestro of the oud Driss El Maloumi, and the Malagasy prince of valiha, Rajery. In Malian culture, the 21-stringed kora is played by griots – memory keepers, bequeathing stories and songs through blood lines. The fretless Arabic lute – oud – is the ancestor of many Western instruments, and the 21-stringed tube zither valiha, made from bamboo and bicycle brake cables, is unofficially the national instrument of Madagascar. Each player proudly carries the musical lineage of their own country into this collaboration, and collectively, they forge a shared style. The rippling beauty of these soft, supple instruments dance together like light on water, and it’s often difficult to know in whose hands the tune originates. Exquisite, joyful chamber music.
