CHANCE CONNECTIONS

Throughout much of the 18th century High Baroque, the lives of composers intersected - often in intriguing ways. A true cosmopolitan, GF Handel worked and travelled through Germany and Italy, eventually settling in England. JE Galliard, another native German, spent his adult life in London where he became a court musician to Prince George of Denmark. Further links to Scandinavia are found in works by a prominent figure of Copenhagen musical life, JA Scheibe, as well as JA Roman, dubbed ‘the Swedish Handel’. But it is in the music of Telemann we find the ultimate synthesis of these diverse national styles.

You could say it is inevitable that complementary artistic temperaments influence each other, but physical encounters are often coincidental, born of a serendipitous alignment of circumstance. Shared ties to Denmark brought Genevieve Lacey (recorder), Jane Gower (baroque bassoon) and Lars Ulrik Mortensen (harpsichord) together as an ensemble in 2005 – a union that continues today, despite diverse international careers. They reunite at UKARIA for a concert celebrating their own chance connections, presenting a program showcasing the true internationalism of Baroque Europe.
