WOMEN OF SONG

‘UKARIA was the first place I played off the back of an exhausting few weeks in Tel Aviv as a finalist in the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest. There was something so refreshing about this gorgeous little theatre, its state-of-the-art acoustics and luxury accommodation. Rejuvenated by the company of my closest musical friends, I could be myself here in a way I couldn’t with millions of people watching.

I was delighted when UKARIA asked if I might be interested in curating Women of Song in 2020, but a little daunted at how I could possibly fill the shoes of my dear friend Iain Grandage! Thankfully, the criminally talented Erkki Veltheim (a hugely accomplished composer/arranger who is responsible for, among other things, the stunning arrangements on Gurrumul’s album Djarimirri) has come on board for the series.

He’ll transform the songbook of the incomparable Laura Jean in May, and join Keir Nuttall and myself in November. Later in the year, we’ll announce an outstanding Indigenous or First Nations artist to complete the series, capturing what I hope is a beautiful snapshot of our country.

I hope you’ll join me in celebrating these trailblazing Australian women of song.’
