THE MAGIC HOUR

Our new dusk series

‘When insect wings are glistening in the beam
Of the low sun, and mountain-tops are bright,
Oh, let me, by the crystal valley-stream,
Wander amid the mild and mellow light
And while the wood-thrush pipes his evening lay,
Give me one lonely hour to hymn the setting day.’

– William Cullen Bryant, A Walk at Sunset

At UKARIA, light and landscape become participants in the creation of art, providing an ever-changing canvas upon which our musicians paint masterpieces in sound.

In autumn, as the cooler months arrive and the days grow shorter, the trees shed their gold-rimmed leaves in spectacular displays of fleeting beauty. In winter, a silvery mist might blanket the hillside as the music passes from major to minor, the landscape exuding a stark, sepulchral beauty. And then there is that most joyous of seasons – spring – where the scent of lavender and roses lingers in the air, and our garden comes alive with a vibrant explosion of tulips and daffodils.

In art as in life, the most memorable moments are always the most ephemeral. Listening to Anne Sofie von Otter’s recital at twilight inspired us to invite Umberto Clerici (cello) and the Goldner String Quartet to curate a series of concerts that commune with the shifting, fugitive qualities of light. Join the artists after each performance for a two-course dinner showcasing seasonal produce from the Adelaide Hills in a unique pairing of music, nature, food and wine.
