THE MAGIC HOUR

‘For me, a landscape does not exist in its own right, since its appearance changes at every moment; but the surrounding atmosphere brings it to life – the light and the air which vary continually. For me, it is only the surrounding objects which gives subjects their true value.’

– Claude Monet

French Impressionist artists have a lot to teach us about the nebulous concept of beauty. Their attempts at turning transience into permanence enhance our own encounters with nature, reminding us to derive a special pleasure from the soft, indistinct contours of clouds, or the dappled reflections cast upon a lake at the golden hour of twilight.

In much the same way that a landscape is never the same twice, a piece of music is illuminated in new and unpredictable ways as it interacts with the environment in which it is heard. UKARIA’s uniquely Australian vista has inspired Erin Helyard, Alexander Sitkovetsky, Helena Rathbone and Sophie Rowell to curate four enchanting programs that are – quite serendipitously – united in their exploration of French repertoire. Celebrating the joys of music making in inspiring company, each concert offers the opportunity to join the artists for a two-course dinner after the performance.
