ANCESTRY

'Folk music, global or world music, music of oral traditions, music passed through ears and hands in a state of constant renewal, inextricably linked to land and lore.

Perhaps because I grew up listening to traditional music, my instrument is a wooden pipe with cousins in every folkloric tradition across the planet, and my first ensemble was an Australian bush band, this way of making music is particularly dear to me.

The artists in this series are chamber musicians of the highest order. They are indelibly marked by their places of origin, the influences of their birthright. They carry and reinterpret old practices and forms; they also improvise and compose new ones, merging sounds and traditions into music that is unmistakably contemporary.

UKARIA’s magical listening space invites us into landscape – the ancient Peramangk Country of the exterior, and the interior of a room designed for contemplation and dreaming. How beautiful to overlay these inimitably Australian vistas with the genealogies of other places.’
